Types of Courier Work in the UK: Local, Same-Day and Tramping

Different work, different economics. Compare local courier jobs, multidrop, dedicated same-day work, long-distance deliveries and overnight tramping before choosing your business model.

Local same-day deliveries

Urgent deliveries for nearby businesses can offer repeat relationships and shorter journeys. Success depends on availability, response time, accurate collection details and dependable communication.

Dedicated long-distance courier work

A dedicated vehicle takes a consignment directly to its destination, often at short notice. Price for the full duty cycle, including dead mileage, waiting and the return journey. Be clear about delivery windows and vehicle capacity.

Multidrop parcel work

Multiple stops can provide regular volume but also introduce tight schedules, parking challenges, scanning requirements and higher stop density. Understand the true hourly return after fuel, time and vehicle wear.

Tramping and overnight work

Long-distance operators may spend nights away from home. Consider accommodation, parking security, rest facilities, subsistence costs and applicable driving-hours rules. Not every courier vehicle or journey is subject to identical regulations, so check the rules that apply to your weight and operations.

Subcontracting versus direct customers

Networks, platforms and established courier companies can offer an entry route. Direct customers may require more sales and administration but give you greater control over service and relationships. Many businesses use a mixture.

Specialist and regulated loads

Medical, temperature-sensitive, hazardous or high-value consignments may need specialist equipment, training, insurance and procedures. Do not offer these services until you understand the specific requirements.

Useful official references

Check current requirements for your particular circumstances with GOV.UK: Set up a business, vehicle insurance, employers’ liability insurance and goods vehicle operator licensing. Regulations, insurance cover and tax treatment depend on the work and vehicle.
