Choosing a Van for Courier Work: Size, Reliability and Costs

The best van is the one that fits your paying work. How to choose a courier van: payload, load space, fuel, servicing, presentation and the trade-offs between small vans, SWB, LWB and Lutons.

Start with the load, not the badge

Write down the dimensions, weight and frequency of the jobs you want. A compact van can be efficient for documents and small urgent parts; an LWB van may suit bulky freight. A larger vehicle brings higher running costs and does not automatically bring more bookings.

Check payload carefully

Payload is not simply the advertised maximum weight. The driver, fuel, equipment, passengers and optional extras count towards permitted vehicle weight. Check the actual plated limits and weigh the vehicle if necessary. Never assume a large-looking van can legally carry a heavy pallet.

Reliability and downtime

Compare service history, tyres, brakes, known model issues, parts availability and warranty terms. Budget for planned servicing and an emergency repair fund. A cheap purchase can become expensive if the van is off the road during booked work.

Presentation and practical equipment

A clean, tidy van is part of your customer experience. Carry appropriate straps, blankets, PPE and loading equipment. Keep the load area free from loose objects and secure every consignment correctly.

Long-distance considerations

For longer journeys, consider driver comfort, fuel economy, safe rest arrangements, roadside support and restrictions on where you can stop overnight. Do not treat sleeping in the van as a substitute for applicable driving and rest requirements.

Buy only when the numbers work

Compare finance, depreciation, insurance, maintenance and fuel against realistic work volumes. Renting or starting with an existing suitable vehicle can reduce early commitment.

Useful official references

Check current requirements for your particular circumstances with GOV.UK: Set up a business, vehicle insurance, employers’ liability insurance and goods vehicle operator licensing. Regulations, insurance cover and tax treatment depend on the work and vehicle.
