Courier motor insurance and hire and reward
Tell your insurer precisely how you use the vehicle. Carrying goods for payment is not the same as ordinary business commuting. Ask for written confirmation that the policy covers the loads, drivers, working hours and locations you intend to serve.
Goods in transit (GIT)
GIT insurance can help protect against loss or damage to goods while they are being carried, subject to policy limits, exclusions, excesses and conditions. Check single-item limits, high-value goods, unattended vehicles, overnight storage and proof-of-delivery requirements. Some customers will require a particular level of cover.
Public liability
Public liability cover can respond to certain third-party injury or property-damage claims arising from business activities. It is not a substitute for motor or goods-in-transit insurance. Ask whether loading and unloading activities are included.
Employers’ liability and subcontractors
If you employ people, employers’ liability insurance may be legally required, subject to exceptions. Using self-employed subcontractors does not automatically settle your responsibilities. Verify employment status, contract terms and whose insurance responds to a claim.
Questions to ask before buying
Ask the broker: Does this cover same-day courier hire and reward? What are the goods limits? Are overnight and European trips covered? Are subcontractors or additional drivers covered? What security conditions apply? What happens after a theft or damaged delivery?
